What are Auto-playing Video Ads with Sound?

Definition
Auto-playing video ads with sound is one the criticised ad formats because of its audio-visual intrusiveness.
Meaning explained
Video ads that appear on a page and automatically start to play with sound on is one of the criticised ad formats. According to Ad experience list, this is reported as one of the most intrusive ad formats because it disrupts user’s experience, who has to interact with the ad in order to mute it or close it. This situation might be especially annoying and negative if user is in a public space. Sometimes this type of an ad might not be easiy to dismiss due to a small close button, which can only increase nuisance and embarrassment.
Publishers in the past used this as format quite often because it can effectively catch user’s attention. The auto-playing ad with with sound on was even considered successful ad format due to the number of clicks. However, according to users’ feedback they were in fact only accidental clicks caused by an effort to close the ad quickly. The resulting negative experience is therefore much stronger. In response, Better Ads Standards try to eliminate this user-unfriendly ad format.
Other ad formats that are deemed by Better Ads Standards are listed in Ad experiences list. The purpose of the compiled list and its information is to reduce user’s need to use adblock software.
