Meaning explained
Better Ads Standards, issued by Coalition for Better Ads (CBA), is a list of standards which aim at implementing non-intrusive ads on websites. The CBA and the standards were founded by trade associations involved in media market, therefore the aim is to remove users’ need for ad blocking software so that publishers’ may increase recovered revenue.
The standards are largely based on feedback of more than 66,000 users regarding negative browser experience and page abandonment rates. The CBA states that the research on consumers’s preferences is an ongoing event. Therefore, the form of mentioned standards is not final and can change in accordance with new acquired data, improved methodology, and ad formats technology innovations.
Better Ads Standards are further specified into subgroups, such as desktop, mobile device, and ad format groupings, which is compiled into the list of Least favoured ad experiences. The number of items on the list is gradually extended as more ad formats and its usages are being tested.
The standards deal with ads and online advertisement in general both on desktop and mobile devices. The initial set of standards, the Standards for North America and Europe, were published in March 2017. In 2019, the standards were introduced on worldwide scale. Many publishers and industries follow the standards – for example, web browser Google Chrome is supposed to have Better Ads Standards inspection filters already incorporated.
