What are Long Pre-roll Ads That Can’t Be Skipped?
Definition
A pre-roll ad is a form of a video ad that plays directly before a video stream.
Meaning explained
A pre-roll ad is an ad format which plays before a video. Unlike from similar ads with a countdown, these pre-rolls can’t be skipped or immediately dismissed. User has therefore no other option than to watch the ad.
The purpose is to participate on visitor’s attention while he is waiting for the desired content. According to advertisers, this ad format is successful because users usually don’t close the broswer tab and rather wait through the whole pre-roll in order to get to the desired video content. Still, for some users these pre-rolls are very uncomfortable and install an adblock as a response.
Due to visitor’s negative feedback, pre-rolls that can’t be skipped are deemed by Better Ads Standards. According to the standard, one or more ads with a combined length over 31 seconds with no skip option within the first 6 seconds is considered intrusive.
Other ad formats that are deemed by Better Ads Standards are listed in Ad experiences list. The purpose of the compiled list and its information is to reduce user’s need to use adblock software.
